A Low Key Trip to Bratislava
We made our way back to Slovakia (we had already been here in the High Tatras) after Vienna. If you read our last post then you know that Caitlin ran into some issues in Vienna with her foot that required crutches. Everything we read said that there’s not much a doctor could do and that rest was the best solution. So that’s what we did for the most part in Bratislava…rest. Luckily, one of the days was raining and Bratislava isn’t necessarily a buzzing tourist destination so we didn’t feel too bad about staying inside.
With that said, I (Ian) did manage to get out one day to do some exploring and Caitlin walked around the city center the last day we were there. The main tourist attraction, when you read about Bratislava, is a castle that overlooks the city (notice the theme of castles/palaces overlooking cities). I walked up there and it’s not the most gorgeous castle you will visit in Europe but it offered some spectacular views of Bratislava and a castle is still a castle!
As a couple and also by myself, we strolled around the old town area which was cute and had a nice, little charm about it. When in the Old Town we visited the main square – Hlavne Namestie – including the courtyard of the old town hall (Stara Radnica), the national theatre and St. Martin’s Cathedral. A friend of ours told us to look about halfway up on the Old Town Hall wall to find a cannonball from the Napoleonic wars- he was right!
This is a really boring city review but we promised to write about EVERYWHERE we went. We also probably aren’t the best people to ask about advice for visiting Bratislava but what we did see was a cute little town that is conveniently located next to other cities that are on everyone’s list of Eastern European cities to visit. So if you have time, then pay it a visit! Caitlin is back and walking without crutches by the way!
